    Hi Josh,

    I’m not sure how the cropping of images is achieved in the Scattered Portfolio grid, but is there a way to customize either the crop, or to replace the thumbnail image that shows in the grid with the crop that I like?

    The random cropping of image doesn’t always work well with bodies — I get legs and arms and faces cut off in strange places.

    Also, the downsizing of some of my featured images to the thumbnail size is causing some blurry resolution in facial features, so I’m wondering if I can just prep my image so it’s exactly what I want it to be.

    Thanks.

    Could you post a link to your page with the grid on it?

    If you’re using a grid style, these images should already be set along with there image style. If the photo is large enough, there shouldn’t be any blur.

    As for cropping- due to the nature of the cropping and the fact the photo must fit both width and height, it’s not always going to be possible to crop in a way that shows off preferred areas of different photos. You’ll need to be able to manually crop the ‘wide’ or ‘tall’ versions of images, which previously this plugin could do -https://wordpress.org/plugins/manual-image-crop/ – however it has been abandoned and I don’t believe it works anymore.

    Your best bet if you want to get an image size as close as possible is to “pre-crop” them in your photo editor by cropping to roughly the size you’d like first and then uploading to WordPress.

    1. Your cropping needs are pretty specific and I’m not sure you’re going to find a solution in WordPress. Pre-cropping in your photo editor first is still probably the best solution.

    Option 2a below may help a little bit, but unless all your dimensions are the same for your image beforehand, you’re going to keep running into this issue.

    2. As for the image quality, you have 2 options:

    a. Make these images larger by adding to your child theme’s functions.php file:

    add_image_size( ‘_s-medium’, 560, 600, true );

    You’ll need to regenerate your photo sizes after doing this. This is a good plugin to do this quickly – https://wordpress.org/plugins/regenerate-thumbnails/

    b. In fusion/src/inc/theme-config.php you can try changing this line (should start around 511):

          [
            'classes' =>'col-md-4 mb-5 h-600',
            'image_size' => '_s-medium'
          ],

    To this:

          [
            'classes' =>'col-md-4 mb-5 h-600',
            'image_size' => '_s-tall'
          ],

    OK — thank you! I’ll try those.

    I did use a theme before that had an “additional” field on the editor page that allowed me to upload an override thumbnail image so that I had better control over the crops that appear in those grids. Maybe I can add that to a wish list here? :)

    Sure. That’s definitely something we’d consider.
